What Is an SMO?
SMOs are thermoplastic devices designed to sit just above the ankle (supramalleolar), offering medial-lateral ankle support without restricting knee movement. They’re lightweight, flexible, and unobtrusive—ideal for everyday wear.
When Are SMOs Recommended?
- Mild ankle instability or low muscle tone
- Sensory processing issues that affect balance
- Prolonged toe-walking (idiopathic)
- Developmental foot deformities in children with cerebral palsy or neuromuscular conditions
Benefits of SMOs
- Supports heel‑toe gait closure with minimal restriction
- Facilitates motor development while providing stability
- Easy to wear with most shoes due to their low-profile design
Typical Wear Schedule
- 1 hour initially
- Increase to 1 hour morning + 1 hour afternoon
- Gradual progression as tolerated over the week
Fabrication & Fitting Process at Prosthetic & Orthotic Designs
- Assessment & Gait Analysis
Observe walking pattern and identify stability needs - Cast, Measure or Digital Scan
Accurately capture limb shape for a custom-fit orthosis - Device Fabrication
Mold a lightweight thermoplastic SMO with medial-lateral support - Fitting & Break-in Plan
Provide instruction for proper wear and a gradual adaptation schedule - Follow-up & Adjustments
Monitor growth and comfort; replace or resize as your child develops (typically every 1–2 years)
